Cat allergy is a significant issue for people who live with cats, especially if the pet is viewed as a member of the family.  Are you allergic to your cat? Now, there may be a way to reduce the suffering from cat allergy. Purina has come out with a cat food that reduces the allergens in cat hair and dander, which are sources of how cat allergic people are exposed.

    Here’s how it works.

Cats produce a common allergen in their saliva known as Fel d 1. When a cat eats Purina’s new food, named “LiveClear”, a certain protein binds to the saliva allergen, and neutralizes it.

As a cat grooms itself, it spreads the saliva onto its hair and  dander.  As the cat sheds, the allergen on the hair and dander is dispersed throughout the home. When a cat eats the food daily, the allergens in its hair and dander is reduced.  Purina claims the cat hair and dander allergens are reduced by an average of 47% beginning the 3rd week of feeding. This means that people in the household are being exposed to much less allergen. As a result, the usual, allergic effect of cat dander should be diminished. Even better, all cats produce the major cat allergen Fel d 1 — regardless of breed, age, hair length, sex or body weight, so most cats will show the same results.

This is great news for people and families with a cat allergy who have cats!
